Civic issues
Topics getting the most attention in Town of Riverhead public meetings, ranked by how frequently they come up.
Vietnam Veterans Recreation Path Praised
Bruce Kagan congratulated the board on the nine-mile veterans memorial path around Calverton Enterprise Park, calling it the jewel of the East End, and flagged future trail expansion interest.
Historical markers at three town sites
The town historian wants markers honoring the town's oldest business, the Aquebogue Park area, and the Wading River Congregational Church, timed to America's 250th anniversary. A foundation grant would cover the roughly $5,000-per-marker cost, so taxpayers wouldn't pay. Board members were supportive but want the wording fixed first.
Great Rock Golf Club improvements legalization
The golf course cleared land without approval and now wants to legalize Hole 17 improvements. The board wants the wooded buffer along Fairway Drive formally mapped and legally protected before signing off.
First responders memorial sculpture on the riverfront
"Grateful Turnout," a sculpture woven from donated fire hose and turnout gear, is proposed for the island at Heide Bear Way and McDermott Avenue, with community members invited to weave thank-you messages into it. The board endorsed the site and next steps toward donation and installation.
4-H Camp Preservation at Reeves Park
The Open Space Committee urged the town to buy the 35-acre parcel at the northeast corner of the forage camp with CPF funds — it would triple the Sound Avenue Preserve and reach the Long Island Sound bluffs at a below-market appraisal price.
Beach permits and recreation parking challenges
The recreation fee schedule bumps the senior beach parking permit up $5, but Councilman Rothwell pushed back and the board agreed to amend it to $10 before the packet is finalized.
Memorial for Christina Gabrielson at South Jamesport Beach
The family of Christina Gabrielson, a well-known Jamesport community figure who died in September at 49, wants to place a small memorial with a plaque at South Jamesport Beach. They'd pay for it, add approved native plantings, and maintain it. The board was supportive of exploring the idea with Buildings and Grounds.
Downtown playground grant (New York Plays)
The town would apply for up to $2.5 million for a downtown playground, with the 20% match covered entirely by other grant funding — no town dollars.
George Young Community Center HVAC failure
A frozen pipe burst shut the community center, canceling youth cheerleading, yoga, and outside group meetings for the week; programs were relocated to Town Hall and Pulaski Street Elementary. The board plans to address the building's patched-together heating system.
America 250 celebration in Riverhead
The reorganized Polish Civic Association wants to hang Polish flags and banners on Pulaski Street's 21 light poles, honor Polish veterans through the Hometown Heroes program, and help document Polish Town for a possible historic registry listing. The town flagged technical issues with the thinner poles and is working with the association on specs.
Stotzy Park Lighting Replacement Grant
The town is applying for state Environmental Bond Act grants to replace Stotzy Park lighting and other parks projects — potentially upgrading parks at little cost to taxpayers.
Peace Pole installation on town property
The Rotary Club wants to install a seven-foot Peace Pole with 'May Peace Prevail on Earth' in four languages on town property. The board favored the downtown Riverwalk, with more poles possible at Stotsky Park and Veterans Memorial Park.
